Objectives of High-Level Meeting

Within the overall context of continuum of care through the life cycle as well as within the health system, a particular focus was put on the intrapartum and postnatal periods, as this is the time when most women and children die and thus represents a vital window of opportunity to save lives.

The broader objectives of the meeting included the following:

1. To raise the profile of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in the development agenda

2. To strengthen political and financial commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health.

3. To accelerate action to achieve high and equitable coverage of evidence-based interventions in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health.

4. To raise awareness of the fact that MDGs four and five are reachable.
