The National Conference on Safe Motherhood and the Millennium Goals took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, on May 12, 2005. It's purpose was to present the success story of the Healthy Mother/ Healthy Child Project implemented by the Ministry of Health and Population in collaboration with USAID and its technical assistance contactor, John Snow Inc. The conference also discussed the challenges to achieve the MDGs goals. The Lancet Neonatal Health Series was introduced and the situation of the neonatal health in Egypt was discussed, including both its successes and remaining challenges.
The Minister of Health of population, the Deputy Director of USAID, and the Secretary General of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate participated in the opening session. The conference was attended by more than 500 people including MOHP senior officials and health providers from various sectors and governorates; university professors; press and media; NGOs; and representatives from UN and international organizations.
