Summary

"Birth asphyxia" is a key problem to address in improving newborn survival. It has been estimated to account for approximately one-third of all neonatal deaths annually, resulting in a total of over one million deaths.

The aim of this meeting, held in Cape Town, South Africa, 29 November to 2 December 2002, was to examine current evidence and program experience regarding birth asphyxia and to discuss program strategies, research priorities, and approaches to promote more attention and action for birth asphyxia within the context of maternal and child health.
